This site will be an ultimate resource for hydroponics.
What is Hydroponics?
Hydroponics is a method of cultivation where plants are fed with water enriched with nutrient elements essential for plant growth. In Hydroponics roots are in contact with 'nutrient solution', which contains essential elements in optimum amount, or nutrient solution is the balanced diet for plants. Hydroponics is soilless gardening, that uses other coarse media which can hold air and moisture, necessary for growth, in a better way. Some exs. include cocopeat, perlite, coarse sand etc.
The main idea behind Hydroponics is conserving roots' energy without diverting its energy in search of food and moisture. Thus full potential of plant is utilised in growth of plant upward, to flowers and fruits. So plants grown in this way are healthier than their soilgrown counterparts. This method of cultivation can be adopted where soil is unavailable or soil is not suitable for farming.
Brief History
In the year 1936, Dr W.F. Gericke coined the name "Hydroponics" to describe cultivation of flowering and fruiting plants in solution of water soluble nutrients dissolved in water. The word Hydroponics is derived from two Greek words 'Hydro' meaning water and 'Ponos' meaning labor. All the labor that soil does has to be done by cultivator.
